New Fire Department Burn Permit Process

The Boxborough Fire Department has instituted a new process for obtaining burn permits this year.  Instead of applying in person down at the station and calling on the day in which you would like to burn, residents are asked to visit the Department's website (www.boxboroughfire.com) each day that they would like to burn.  If burning is allowed on that day, the resident will be asked to fill out a quick online form (which will be available after 9:30 AM).  Once the resident fills out the form, they will be free to burn that day subject to the Rules and Regulations of the permit.  Residents will need to return to the website EACH day that they wish to burn and fill out the form again.

For those residents that are unable to use the online form, they can contact the fire station each day that they'd like to burn at 978-264-1770, option 4.

We hope that residents will find this new process more efficient.

Open Burning Rules and Regulations (from Massachusetts DEP):

  • Between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • No less than 75 feet away from all dwellings.
  • It is never allowable to burn grass, hay, leaves, stumps or tires.

Starting the fire:

  • Remove all grass from the area where you will be burning.
  • Try to start the fire with natural "kindling" - never with gasoline or charcoal lighter fluid. If you must use an artificial helper, kerosene is probably safest.

While burning:

  • Never add brush that is green or wet. It will reduce the efficiency of the fire and produce thick smoke.
  • Someone must attend the fire until it's completely out. You will need a hose or other supply of water and a shovel or rake for controlling the fire.

Putting the fire out:

  • Burn the fire down to the coals, drown them with water, spread them out, then drown them again.
