How do I obtain a Dog License?

State law mandates that all dog owners must obtain a license for their dog(s) each year. Licenses are available at Town Hall according to the following fee schedule:

  • Neutered/spayed dog: $10 each
  • Unneutered/unspayed dog: $15 each
  • Seniors (70+): no charge
  • Kennel Licenses:
    • Up to 4 dogs: $25 total fee
    • 5-10 dogs: $50 total fee
    • 11 or more dogs: $75 total fee

Prior year licenses expire on March 10.  Dog owners have from January to March 10 to re-register their dog(s) without penalty. PLEASE NOTE:  After March 10, a $50 per dog late fee will be imposed. You then have 10 days to pay the license fee plus the $50 fine. After March 20, the late fee rises to $75 per dog. Anyone who has not re-licensed their dog(s) by May 15 will have their names turned over to Ayer District Court by the Dog Officer.

Dog license applications are mailed out every January with the Annual Street Listing.  You may also come in person to apply at the Town Clerk's Office or click here to download an application. Send the completed application, together with proof of up-to-date rabies vaccination, evidence of neutering/spaying (if not already on file) and the appropriate fee, to the Town Clerk's office, 29 Middle Road, Boxborough, MA 01719.

Starting in January 2016, dog licenses will be payable through our Online Payments portal.  If your dog has an up-to-date rabies certificate on file, you can renew your dog's license online via electronic cash transfer from your checking account (ACH) or by credit or debit card.  Please note that there is a fee for credit and debit card purchases.

Online Payments for Dog License Renewal

Seniors 70 years-of-age or older cannot use the Online Payment portal, since no payment is involved.  Seniors can submit an online application by clicking on the link below:
