Select Board Statement - Acknowledging Racial Disparity

We, the Boxborough Select Board, can no longer stay silent or overlook the racism and bias that exists in our town, state and country. The turbulence created in the wake of recent events is not the time to be silent. We are committed to the Acknowledgment, Affirmation and Action required to bring about change in our great town.

George Floyd has been added to an ever-growing list of victims of police brutality and neglect by the justice system: Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, Breonna Taylor, Stephon Clark, Philando Castile, Alton Sterling, Walter Scott, Sandra Bland, Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Atatiana Jefferson, Pamela Turner, Trayvon Martin and so many others we will never know.

We acknowledge that there is racism, prejudice and intolerance in Boxborough, Massachusetts, America and in the world. We also acknowledge that we all have unintentionally benefited from the systematic oppression of Blacks and other minorities.

Dismantling something that is so engrained in our society, will take time, energy and education. It will be exhausting, and it will be difficult however Boxborough, our state and our country will be better for the work we are doing to end the plight of racism and hate.

We would like to encourage residents of Boxborough and beyond to lead with empathy. Seeking to learn and become educated on what people have turned a blind eye to for too long.

It took the murder of George Floyd by a white police officer, one of so many unarmed Blacks who have died at the hands of the police over the last several decades, to get people in our town to have the kind of discussions we all need to stand up to, and ultimately end, the systematic racism that has been in plain sight all along.

Therefore, we place anti-racism at the top of our priorities in order to fulfill our ethical obligations. And we will not stop until Boxborough is a welcoming and engaged community for all.
