Boxborough Guidelines for a Safe 2020 Halloween

Trick-or-treating in Boxborough will be taking place on Halloween evening, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Saturday, October 31st.

The Boxborough Board of Health (Board) recommends Boxborough residents follow the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) guidance for celebrating Halloween.  The links for the CDC’s and DPH’s webpages are provided below.

Boxborough Guidelines for a Safe 2020 Halloween

If families choose to trick or treat we recommend the following modification to the guidance.

  • Trick or treaters should stay in family units
  • Allow families to leave a house before you approach the house
  • For those handing out candy, we recommend individually prepackaged goodie bags to hand out on the porch or front step
  • The Board recommends the use of gloves or tongs for handing out treats (no communal bowl)
  • Maintain 6 feet from the entry doors of house whenever possible
  • Masks should be worn when at doors of house and when trick or treater cannot socially distance
  • If you are sick, tested positive for COVID-19 or subject to an Isolation or Quarantine Order please stay home and don’t participate by handing out candy or treats
  • Supervise trick-or-treaters to ensure they are wearing masks and not gathering in to groups of with non-household members

The Board discourages the following activities:

  • Attending crowded costume parties held indoors, or any gatherings that exceed indoor or outdoor gathering limits;
  • Going to an indoor haunted house where people may be crowded together and screaming; and
  • Going on hayrides or tractor rides with people who are not in your household
  • Indoor haunted houses; and
  • Hayrides or tractor rides with people who are not in your household

Additionally, the Board recommends those individual homeowners who don’t want to participate in trick-or-treating should leave the outdoor lights off to indicate their non-participation.
