Public Records Requests

The Massachusetts Public Records Law provides that every person has a right of access to public information. This right of access includes the right to inspect, copy, or have copies of records provided.

Rules & Regulations

The Guide to the Massachusetts Public Records Law (PDF) is published and made available by the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. It contains extensive information about Public Records, including Frequently Asked Questions, exemptions from Public Records Law, applicable fees, and statutory references.

The State has also provided Public Records Access Regulations (PDF) to help you understand your rights.

The Secretary of State's Office provides a flowchart of the Public Records Access process here.

On December 13, 2021 the Boxborough Select Board voted to approve these guidelines to help you navigate Public Records Law and understand the process. These were updated in December 2022, and link to the updated Public Records Guidelines as of December 2022.
